Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee and Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore to Participate in the National Civics Bee®/Rhode Island State Finals
On Tuesday, June 17 at 5:30PM, the first ever National Civics Bee®/Rhode Island State Finals will be held at the Swift Center (121 Pierce Street) in East Greenwich. “We are proud that Governor McKee and Secretary Amore will be here to congratulate the students who are participating. Their interest in civics education of young people here in Rhode Island is extremely important. The East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce took on this project because of our belief in the importance of civics education in our democracy. The participation of Governor McKee and Secretary Amore is an endorsement of our event and the promotion of civics education,” according to Stephen M. Lombardi, East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.
The EG Chamber has taken on this national event (locally here in Rhode Island) to promote civics education and participation in the democratic process. There were 43 applicants statewide, from which our judges selected 20 to participate in the Finals on June 17. The United States Chamber of Commerce will have a film crew on hand to record the festivities. “We are proud that the US Chamber is honoring our event and the film crew traveling here to East Greenwich,” added Mr. Lombardi. The June 17 National Civics Bee®/Rhode Island State Finals is open to the public, and we hope the community will come out to support our young students. The winner will receive $1,000, a trip to Washington, D.C., for the National Finals, and a chance to win $50,000. The 20 finalists are from: Cole Middle School and Our Lady of Mercy in East Greenwich; Davisville Middle School in North Kingstown; Samuel Slater Middle School in Pawtucket; The Wheeler School in Providence; and the Wilbur-McMahon School in Little Compton. Participating sponsors include: Adler Pollock & Sheehan, Allegra Providence, Bank Newport, East Greenwich News, East Greenwich Rotary, Town of East Greenwich, and Verdi Productions along with cooperation from the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, Narragansett Chamber of Commerce, and the Southern RI Chamber of Commerce.
